When the Poor Boy Held Her Hand, the Millionaire's Daughter Stood Up
Chapter 4: The Woman Who Stole Everything
The banquet hall emptied under police order.
Guests were sent into the lobby. Reporters were pushed outside. Lily was examined by a private emergency doctor who confirmed what Adrian was beginning to fear: her muscles were weak, but not destroyed. Her body had been suppressed for years by medication no child should have received.
Cassandra sat in a private dining room with two guards at the door.
Her elegance was gone.
Adrian stood across from her, holding Evelyn's locket in his fist.
"Tell me the truth."
Cassandra stared at him with wet, furious eyes. "You loved a dead woman more than you ever loved me."
"Tell me."
She laughed bitterly. "Evelyn was going to leave you. Did you know that? She found out about Merrick's illegal drug trials. She found out your charity funds were being moved through shell accounts. She was going to expose everything."
Adrian's face turned gray. "My charity funds?"
Cassandra smiled through tears. "Merrick needed money. I needed power. You were grieving, busy, easy to guide."
"And my son?"
"He was supposed to disappear quietly," she said. "Merrick sold him through a private adoption network. I told you he died. You believed me because you were too broken to ask questions."
Adrian staggered back.
Outside the door, Oliver heard every word.
Lily, wrapped in a blanket beside him, reached for his hand.
Cassandra continued, voice shaking now. "Lily became useful after the accident. A disabled child made the foundation untouchable. Donations tripled. No one audits grief, Adrian. No one questions a poor little girl in a wheelchair."
Adrian's voice was barely human.
"There was no accident, was there?"
Cassandra looked away.
That was answer enough.
The doors opened.
Police officers entered.
Cassandra stood suddenly. "Adrian, please. I was your wife."
"No," he said. "You were the woman who buried my wife, stole my son, and kept my daughter in a chair."
As the officers handcuffed her, Cassandra screamed one final thing.
"You still don't know the worst part!"
Everyone froze.
She smiled like a woman with nothing left to lose.
"Evelyn never died."
