When the Poor Boy Held Her Hand, the Millionaire's Daughter Stood Up

Chapter 2: The Miracle No One Wanted

For one long moment, no one moved.

Then the room erupted.

Guests gasped, cried, whispered, and lifted their phones. A few began applauding without understanding why. The orchestra stopped mid-note. Waiters stood with silver trays hanging uselessly in their hands.

Adrian reached for Lily.

"Sweetheart," he whispered. "Are you hurt?"

Lily looked down at her own feet. Tears filled her eyes, not from pain, but from wonder.

"I can feel the floor," she said.

Adrian covered his mouth. The sound that left him was not a word. It was a broken, grateful sob.

The boy slowly let go of Lily's hand and stepped back.

That was when Cassandra Vale rushed forward.

"Get him away from her!" she cried.

Her voice was too sharp. Too frightened.

Adrian looked up, confused.

Cassandra grabbed Lily's shoulders and tried to push her back into the chair. "This is dangerous. She could collapse. Where is Dr. Merrick? Someone call Dr. Merrick now."

Lily flinched from her touch.

Adrian saw it.

For the first time, he saw it.

His daughter was afraid of his wife.

The boy spoke quietly. "She doesn't need the chair."

Cassandra spun on him. "You filthy little thief. Who let you in?"

"I followed the man who brings her medicine," the boy said.

The room went silent again.

Adrian stood slowly.

"What medicine?"

Cassandra's lips parted. "Her regular treatment. You know this."

"No," the boy said. "Not treatment. Drops. They make her weak. They make her sleepy. They make her think her legs don't work."

Adrian stared at him. "Who are you?"

The boy swallowed.

"My name is Oliver."

Cassandra's face changed.

Not fear this time.

Recognition.

The boy reached into his torn jacket and pulled out a small silver locket. Inside was a photograph of a young woman holding two babies.

Adrian took one step back.

The woman in the photograph was his first wife, Evelyn.

Dead Evelyn.

The boy looked him in the eyes.

"She was my mother too."
