When the Poor Boy Held Her Hand, the Millionaire's Daughter Stood Up

Chapter 1: The Boy at the Banquet

It was the annual Vale Children's Charity Banquet, hosted by billionaire Adrian Vale in honor of his daughter, Lily.

Lily sat in her wheelchair beside the head table, wearing a pale lavender dress and a white cardigan. Her hair was braided with small ribbons. Her face was sweet but distant, like a child watching life from behind glass. For three years, doctors had said she might never walk again after the accident that killed her mother.

Then a small dirty hand reached toward her.

The room seemed to shift.

A boy stood in front of Lily's wheelchair. He was thin, no older than twelve, with dust on his face and mud on his shirt. His left hand hovered in the air, rough and trembling but gentle.

Adrian Vale crossed the room in an instant.

"Stay away from my daughter."

His voice was low, controlled, and full of warning. One hand settled protectively on Lily's shoulder.

The boy did not run. He looked up at Adrian with clear, stubborn eyes.

"I won't hurt her," he said. Then he lowered himself slightly in front of Lily. "May I ask her something?"

He turned to the girl.

"Do you want to try?"

Adrian's face broke. "No, please..."

But Lily, who had barely spoken all evening, slowly lifted her right hand and placed it into the boy's.

A hush fell over the banquet hall.

The boy did not pull her. He only held her hand.

Lily's fingers tightened.

Her expression changed first. The emptiness left her eyes. Her mouth opened in surprise. Then, before anyone could stop it, she pushed herself forward.

Her feet touched the marble floor.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Lily stood.

The entire room froze.

A woman screamed.

Adrian dropped to his knees, staring at his daughter as if the dead had returned.

But across the hall, his elegant second wife, Cassandra, turned white with terror.
