He Found His Daughter Behind a Dumpster

Chapter 3 - The Woman In The Photograph

Police searched the house that night.

Rachel was not there.

Her car was found abandoned three blocks away.

The wooden box was missing from Daniel’s study.

But one thing remained.

A loose floorboard beneath the cabinet.

Daniel had never noticed it before.

Inside was an envelope.

Emily’s handwriting was on the front.

Daniel - if anything happens to me.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

The letter was dated three weeks before Emily’s death.

Daniel read the first line and had to sit down.

Rachel knows what I found.

His breathing stopped.

The letter continued.

Emily had discovered that money was being stolen from the charitable foundation Daniel’s family operated.

The foundation paid for housing, medical bills, and emergency support for women and children.

Large amounts had vanished over two years.

Emily traced several transfers to shell companies.

One of those companies belonged to Rachel Blake.

Daniel read the name again.

Rachel.

His wife.

Emily had known her.

Not casually.

They had worked together.

Rachel had been a financial consultant for the foundation.

Emily found the fraud.

Then Emily died.

The official cause was a car accident.

Her vehicle crossed the median during heavy rain and struck a barrier.

Police found no evidence of another vehicle.

Daniel had accepted it as tragedy.

Now he found something else inside the envelope.

A flash drive.

Detective Harris opened the files.

There were spreadsheets, bank statements, emails, and a short audio recording.

Emily’s voice came through the computer speakers.

“If you’re hearing this, I didn’t get the chance to tell Daniel.”

She sounded frightened.

“Rachel knows I copied the accounts. She told me I would regret trying to ruin her life.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

Emily continued.

“I don’t think she’s working alone.”

Then another name.

Victor Hale.

Daniel knew him immediately.

His own business attorney.

The man who had handled Emily’s estate.

The man who introduced Daniel to Rachel eighteen months after Emily died.

The detective stopped the recording.

Daniel felt physically sick.

Rachel had not entered his life by coincidence.

She had been placed there.

To watch him.

To control the evidence.

And perhaps to find out whether Emily had left anything behind.

Then Harris received a call.

Rachel had been found.

She was trying to cross state lines.

And inside her car, officers discovered the missing wooden box.

But the photograph Sophie described was gone.
