He Found His Daughter Behind a Dumpster

Chapter 2 - What Sophie Was Afraid To Say

Daniel did not take Sophie home.

That decision confused the police officer who arrived ten minutes later.

It confused Maria too.

But Sophie’s reaction had told Daniel everything he needed to know.

Home was the place she feared.

So they went to the hospital instead.

Maria came with them because Sophie refused to release her hand.

When a nurse tried to separate them for the examination, Sophie began screaming.

“Don’t leave me!”

Maria looked at Daniel helplessly.

He nodded.

“Stay.”

The examination revealed dehydration, bruising around Sophie’s wrist, and a small cut behind her ear.

Nothing life-threatening.

That almost made Daniel feel worse.

Someone had been careful.

Careful enough to hurt a child without leaving obvious evidence.

A detective named Harris sat beside Sophie’s bed later that evening.

Daniel remained across the room.

Maria sat beside the girl.

“Sophie,” Harris said gently, “can you tell me how you ended up behind the restaurant?”

The child stared at the blanket.

“She drove me.”

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“Who?”

Sophie glanced toward him.

“Rachel.”

Hearing the name out loud made the room feel different.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Detective Harris continued carefully.

“Why did she take you there?”

Sophie shook her head.

“She was mad.”

“About what?”

Sophie looked at her father.

“I found Mommy’s box.”

Daniel frowned.

“What box?”

“My real mommy’s.”

Daniel went still.

Sophie’s biological mother, Emily, had died when Sophie was two.

At least, that was what Sophie believed.

Daniel had kept a small wooden box containing photographs, letters, and jewelry that belonged to Emily. It had been locked inside his study.

Sophie should never have been able to find it.

“What did you see?” Daniel asked.

“A picture.”

“What picture?”

Sophie swallowed.

“Mommy standing with Rachel.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

Rachel had always claimed she never knew Emily.

They supposedly met only after Emily’s death, through mutual friends.

Sophie shook her head.

“They were together.”

Maria gently rubbed her back.

“There was writing,” Sophie continued.

“What did it say?”

Sophie thought carefully.

“Rachel, don’t tell Daniel.”

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

Detective Harris immediately looked at him.

“What do you know about that?”

“Nothing.”

And that was the truth.

Sophie continued.

“Rachel saw me holding the picture.”

“What happened then?”

“She grabbed me.”

Sophie touched her wrist.

“She said I wasn’t supposed to see it.”

Maria’s expression hardened.

“She put me in the car. She said we were going somewhere fun.”

Daniel lowered his head.

His daughter had trusted Rachel because he told her to.

He had encouraged Sophie to call her Mommy.

He had reassured her every time she seemed uncomfortable.

He had mistaken silence for adjustment.

Now he understood.

Rachel had not been trying to become Sophie’s mother.

She had been trying to control what Sophie remembered about the first one.
