The Ring That Should Have Been Buried
CHAPTER 3 - THE BROTHER'S LIE
Luc took the photograph as if it might burn him.
Daniel watched him study it, watched denial drain out of his face by degrees. The date stamp in the corner was sixteen years old. Luc's hand shook.
"My brother Etienne told me you lost the baby," Luc said.
Claire gave a bitter smile. "After he made sure I had no way to reach you."
The hostess quietly slipped away. None of them noticed.
Daniel did.
He noticed everything now. The way his mother's voice flattened when she was trying not to cry. The way Luc kept rubbing his thumb over the silver cufflink on his right wrist. The way the room smelled of butter, coffee, and panic.
"Start from the beginning," Daniel said.
They both looked at him.
For once, neither one tried to protect him with silence.
Claire told it in pieces. She and Luc had married too fast, against the wishes of Luc's powerful family. When she became pregnant, Luc was traveling between Paris and Geneva, trying to prove he could build a life outside his brother's control. Then came the crash on a mountain road. A burned car. A dead woman identified through documents and jewelry. The ring.
"I was never in that car," Claire said. "Etienne came to me two days before. He said Luc wanted me gone. He said there had been threats over money and company shares. I didn't believe him until men followed me home."
Luc's jaw tightened. "I never sent anyone."
"I know that now."
She had fled. A nurse friend had hidden her. Daniel was born early. Sick for weeks. By the time she recovered, the newspapers had already printed her death.
"So you stayed hidden for fifteen years?" Luc asked.
"Because every time I tried to surface, Etienne found me first."
Luc pulled out his phone immediately. "I'm calling the police."
Claire grabbed his arm. "If Etienne learns Daniel is your son before we know how he buried another woman under my name, we lose our only advantage."
Daniel looked from one to the other. He was tired of being a secret carried by adults.
Then Luc's phone lit up with a message preview.
ETIENNE: Lunch going well? Has the boy told you where he got Madeleine's ring?
Daniel felt his blood go cold.
