The Ring That Should Have Been Buried
CHAPTER 2 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK
Claire looked as if she had seen a ghost.
So did the man.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then the manager rushed over, muttering apologies, asking if there was a problem, but the guest raised one hand without looking away from Claire. The room obeyed him. Wealth had a way of doing that even without a raised voice.
"Everyone out," he said quietly.
Daniel had never heard a soft voice sound so dangerous.
The manager hesitated, then guided the nearest diners toward the other room. Within moments, only four people remained near the marble table: Daniel, Claire, the stranger, and a hostess frozen by the doorway.
Claire took a shaky breath. "Luc."
The man's face tightened. "You're dead."
Daniel felt the words land inside him like stones.
His mother closed her eyes for a moment. "I know what you were told."
"Told?" Luc stepped closer. "I identified a body. I buried my wife. I stood at her grave."
Daniel stared at his mother. She had always said his father died before he was born. She had said the ring came from her own mother. She had said their life in Lyon before Paris did not matter.
Now every sentence she had ever spoken seemed to split open.
"Mom," Daniel said, his voice rough. "Who is he?"
Claire looked at him, and the fear on her face changed into something deeper. Shame.
"He's your father."
The word struck harder than Luc's grip had.
Luc stepped back as if she'd hit him. He looked at Daniel again. The freckles. The dark brown eyes. The slight build. He seemed to be counting years and losses all at once.
"That's impossible," he said.
Claire laughed once, a broken sound. "No. What's impossible is what your brother did."
Luc went still.
He did not ask which brother.
He already knew.
Then Claire reached into her coat pocket with trembling fingers and pulled out an old folded photograph, softened at the edges from years of hiding.
She laid it on the marble table between them.
In it, a younger Claire stood beside Luc on a beach, smiling.
And her visibly pregnant belly rested under Luc's hand.
