The Boy in Velvet Ran to the Maid-The Mother He Never Forgot

CHAPTER 2 - THE LIE THAT LIVED

The hotel manager wanted everyone moved.

The guests wanted answers.

The little boy wanted only Elena.

He would not let go of her hand, even when they were taken into a private sitting room behind the lobby. He sat pressed against her side on a cream sofa, still hiccuping from tears, his velvet sleeve wrapped around her wrist as if she might vanish if he loosened his grip.

Elena could barely breathe.

Across from her sat the emerald-dressed woman, stiff and pale, her pearl necklace still twisted. Beside the door stood Henrik Dahl, broader now than she remembered, older in the face, carrying guilt like a second suit.

The manager brought water no one drank.

The boy looked up at Elena with red-rimmed eyes. "You're really here."

She touched his cheek carefully, as if she were touching fire. "What's your name, sweetheart?"

"Lucas."

Her heart lurched.

That was the name she had whispered to her newborn son before he was taken from her room.

The emerald woman snapped, "Children repeat things. He is confused."

Henrik turned to her. "He's not confused, Marianne."

So that was her name.

Marianne folded her hands so tightly her knuckles whitened. "You have no right to do this here."

"No," Henrik said. "I lost that right years ago."

Elena stared at him. "Then start talking."

Henrik's voice was low. Five years ago, Elena had worked as a seasonal waitress at a mountain resort in Austria. She had gone into labor early. There had been complications. She had lost consciousness. When she woke, Henrik, then the resort's legal adviser and her late mother's oldest friend, told her the baby had not survived.

Elena had believed him because grief leaves no room for suspicion.

Henrik swallowed hard. "The child was alive. Marianne arranged for him to be removed before you woke."

Marianne stood up. "That is absurd."

Lucas shrank closer to Elena.

Henrik reached into his jacket and pulled out a thin file.

"I found the nurse's statement last month," he said. "And the amended birth record."

Elena's hands shook.

Then Lucas looked between them and asked the question that tore the room open.

"If she's my mother," he whispered, "why did nobody come get me?"

Henrik closed his eyes.

And Marianne said, too quickly, "Because she left you."
