The Boy in Velvet Ran to the Maid-The Mother He Never Forgot

CHAPTER 1 - THE BOY WHO KNEW

Elena Voss was on her knees, polishing a streak of water from the marble floor, when she heard the child crying.

It was the kind of cry that cut through everything.

The low murmur of hotel guests.

The soft squeak of her mop.

The rolling suitcases near the glass doors.

She lifted her head.

A little boy in a deep blue velvet suit was running toward her. His pale blond hair was falling out of place. His green eyes were wild with tears.

Before Elena could rise, he crashed into her and wrapped both arms around her waist.

Her cleaning cloth slipped from her hand.

He buried his face against her pale blue housekeeping uniform and sobbed as if his heart were breaking.

"Mommy, you came back! I knew you would come back!"

Elena froze.

For one awful, impossible second, the whole world dropped away.

Then the ache she had buried for five years came roaring back.

His hair smelled of soap and sun.

Her hands trembled. She wanted to hold him. God, she wanted to. But fear stopped her.

Around them, the lobby went still.

The front desk staff stared. Guests rose from velvet chairs. A bellboy beside the brass luggage cart looked as if he had forgotten how to breathe.

Then high heels struck the marble.

A woman in an emerald satin gown rushed toward them, pearls shaking at her throat, fury burning in her face.

"How dare you touch my son?"

She raised her hand.

Elena flinched.

But the slap never came.

A man's hand caught the woman's wrist in midair.

He was tall, silver-haired, dressed in a dark gray three-piece suit. His jaw was tight. His gray eyes were fixed on the woman with cold fury.

"Stop!" he said. "She is his real mother."

The woman stared at him.

"What...?"

The boy clung harder to Elena.

Guests whispered.

"Oh my God... his real mother?"

The woman stumbled backward, her pearls crooked now, and collapsed at the edge of the carpet.

"No... this can't be happening!"

Elena looked up at the man holding the woman back.

And when she recognized him, her breath caught.

It was Henrik Dahl.

The man who had testified, five years earlier, that her baby had died.

"You told me my son was dead."

Henrik's face turned ashen.

"I know," he said. "And I have been trying to tell you the truth ever since."
