The Chip Hidden in My Dead Wife's Hand|
Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Chose The Family Name
The second chip contained the missing footage.
Daniel watched it alone in Emily's room.
This time, the balcony video did not stop.
Emily stood near the railing, one hand gripping the black chip.
Lucas grabbed her wrist.
Margaret stood behind him, crying but not stopping him.
Emily said something the camera could not capture.
Lucas shoved her.
Margaret reached out too late.
Emily disappeared over the rail.
For one terrible second, Lucas and Margaret stared down.
Then Margaret turned to him and said something.
This time, the audio was clear.
"Get rid of the files. I will call it an accident."
Daniel sat in the dark for a long time.
The truth did not make grief easier.
It made it heavier.
Because Emily had not been failed by strangers.
She had been failed by blood.
The next morning, the family gathered for the final service. Lucas stood at the front in his brown suit, pretending sorrow. Margaret held a handkerchief to her mouth, accepting sympathy from people who did not know she had chosen reputation over her daughter.
Daniel waited until everyone sat.
Then he walked to the front.
He did not wear civilian black.
He wore his Army dress uniform again.
Emily had always said he looked most honest in it.
Margaret stiffened when she saw him.
Lucas narrowed his eyes.
Daniel placed a small projector on the table beside Emily's photograph.
"Before we say goodbye to my wife," he said, "everyone deserves to know who she really was."
Margaret stood.
"Daniel, this is not the time."
He looked at her.
"You chose the time when you closed her coffin before I came back."
The room went silent.
Lucas took a step forward.
"What are you doing?"
Daniel's voice did not rise.
"Finishing what Emily started."
The video played.
Emily's message.
The transfers.
The medication records.
Then the balcony footage.
People gasped.
Margaret collapsed into a chair.
Lucas lunged toward the projector, but Harris and two military police officers blocked him. The local detectives stepped from the hallway. They had been waiting.
Lucas shouted, "She was unstable!"
Daniel turned to him.
"No. She was brave."
Margaret sobbed.
"I was trying to protect the family."
Daniel looked at her with disgust.
"You did not protect your family. You protected its name."
Lucas was arrested first.
Then Margaret.
As they took her away, she looked at Daniel.
"I lost my daughter."
Daniel's voice was cold.
"No. You gave her away the moment she needed you most."
For the first time, Margaret had no answer.
