The Chip Hidden in My Dead Wife's Hand|
Chapter 2 - The Video Emily Left Behind
Daniel did not go home after the wake.
He drove to the only person he still trusted.
Colonel Harris lived forty minutes outside the city, retired from the Army but still too disciplined to sleep past midnight. When he opened the door and saw Daniel standing in full uniform, soaked from the rain, he did not ask useless questions.
"Come in."
Daniel placed the chip on the kitchen table.
"Emily left this in her hand."
Harris looked at it.
"Then she wanted you to see something."
It took less than twenty minutes to access the files.
There were three folders.
One labeled House Cameras.
One labeled Company Transfers.
And one labeled If I Die.
Daniel opened the last one first.
Emily appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in their bedroom, wearing the pale blue sweater he had given her last Christmas. Her face was tired. Her eyes were red. But her voice was steady.
"Daniel, if you are watching this, then I did not survive long enough to tell you myself."
Daniel's hand tightened on the back of the chair.
Emily took a breath in the video.
"They told you I was depressed. They told you I was unstable. They told you my fall was an accident. Please do not believe them."
Harris looked at Daniel but said nothing.
Emily continued.
"I found out Lucas has been stealing from the Vale Foundation. Not small money. Millions. He used my mother's charity accounts, fake medical grants, and shell companies. When I confronted him, he laughed and said nobody would believe me."
Daniel's jaw hardened.
Then Emily's voice broke.
"My mother knows."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Margaret.
The grieving mother in pearls.
The woman who sobbed into his chest at the hospital.
Emily looked directly into the camera.
"I wanted to tell you when you came home, but Lucas found the files. He said if I tried to expose him, he would make my death look like another episode of grief. Mother begged me to stay quiet. She said family scandals destroy women first."
Daniel could barely breathe.
The video shook slightly as Emily leaned closer.
"There is one more thing. The night I died, I was not alone on the balcony."
The screen cut to black.
Then a security clip began.
Grainy.
Silent.
The mansion balcony.
Emily standing near the railing.
Lucas entering behind her.
Margaret following moments later.
Daniel watched as Lucas grabbed Emily's arm.
Emily pulled away.
Margaret reached for something in Emily's hand.
The clip ended before the fall.
Harris swore under his breath.
"Someone cut the footage."
Daniel's eyes did not leave the screen.
"Then we find the missing part."
Harris opened the second folder.
Company transfers.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
One name appeared again and again.
A private clinic.
A doctor.
And a medication order under Emily's name.
Daniel stood very still.
His wife had not just been pushed.
She had been drugged before she died.
And the doctor who signed the prescription was attending her funeral the next morning.
