He Saw Three Boys Who Had His Face

CHAPTER 4 - THE THINGS WE INHERIT

"He stole seven years from me."

Adrian's voice was low, but it shook the room more than shouting would have.

He stood alone for a moment after reading the letter.

Elena had written that one of the boys needed surgery at birth. She had asked for nothing except the truth. She had begged his mother to tell Adrian he had sons. She wrote that she could survive his anger, but not his ignorance.

His mother had never answered.

Or perhaps she had never seen it.

The silver-gray tie at Adrian's throat suddenly felt too tight. He loosened it with one sharp tug and looked at the three boys on the sofa again. Back on that same velvet sofa, they seemed smaller now, sleepy and confused after too much adult pain.

Celeste moved closer, but not to reclaim him.

"I should have told you sooner," she said. "I found the letter while helping your mother sort old boxes before the house sold. Your father had hidden more than that one. I only learned Elena's last name this week."

Adrian looked at her.

"So why agree to tonight?"

A sad smile touched her mouth. "Because part of me hoped it meant nothing. And part of me knew if it meant something, you would never marry me."

For the first time that night, he saw not a wronged fiancée but a woman choosing dignity over denial.

"I'm sorry," he said.

She nodded once. "I know."

Then one of the boys slipped off the sofa and walked to him. The middle one. Leo.

He held up a small inhaler.

"He gets scared when Noah coughs," Elena said softly. "They all do."

Adrian glanced at the boy still seated, pale now, one hand pressed to his chest.

Doctor before groom. Father before wounded son.

He was beside Noah in a second.

"When did this start?"

"Ten minutes ago," Elena answered, rising fast.

Adrian listened to the child's breathing and felt alarm sharpen every thought. Tight airways. Fast pulse. Too much strain.

"We're going to the hospital now."

He scooped Noah into his arms while Leo grabbed the old lake photo from the table and Eli reached for Elena's hand.

As they hurried toward the service elevator, Celeste called after them.

"Adrian."

He turned.

She held up a ring box he had never given her.

"I'll tell the guests myself," she said. Then she looked at the children. "Go."

When the elevator doors opened, Noah began to wheeze harder.

And Elena whispered the words Adrian had feared most all evening.

"He was born with your heart condition."
