He Saw Three Boys Who Had His Face

CHAPTER 3 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

"Did my father pay you to disappear?"

Adrian asked it after he had moved them to a smaller private lounge down the hall.

The boys were at a side table now with orange juice and untouched cookies. The banquet manager had been dismissed. Celeste had refused to leave. She stood near the window in her red gown, rigid and silent, listening to the ruins of her own evening.

Elena sat on the edge of a chair as if she might be ordered out of it.

"Yes," she said.

The honesty hit harder than denial would have.

Adrian looked down at the old photo still in his hand. "Why?"

"Because I was pregnant. Because your father said your medical fellowship was beginning, and I would destroy your future. Because he said if I loved you, I would let you go."

Adrian shut his eyes for one painful second.

His father had been dead three years. Too convenient for anger. Too late for answers.

"And you believed him?"

"I was twenty-six. Scared. Sick all the time. My mother had just started chemotherapy. He offered money for her treatment."

Celeste finally spoke. "So you sold his children?"

Elena turned to her with a steadiness that made the words sound crueler than they had a second before.

"No. I kept them alive."

Silence settled heavy in the room.

The boys knew enough to stay quiet. One of them traced circles in spilled condensation with his finger. Another watched Adrian with open hope that felt almost unbearable.

Adrian sat across from Elena.

"Why come tonight?"

"I didn't. I work here two nights a week. I didn't know whose event it was until I saw your name on the seating board this afternoon. I tried to switch shifts. My manager said no."

He believed her. He didn't want to, but he did.

Then Celeste reached into her purse and placed a folded document on the table between them.

"I found this in Adrian's mother's things last month," she said.

His mother's things.

A letter, unopened, addressed in Elena's handwriting.

The date on the envelope was seven years ago.

Adrian stared at it.

If his mother had received it, then Elena had tried to reach him.

He lifted the letter with shaking fingers.

And on the back, in his father's hand, were four words:

Return to sender. Do not deliver.
