He Called the Waitress His Wife at the Gala

CHAPTER 5 - THE ROOM SHE WALKED INTO

The ballroom glittered with glass and silver and quiet money.

Lucia had delivered trays there before. Tonight she entered through the main doors, not the service entrance. Hugh walked beside her, but not too close. Nina led them. Daniel followed.

At a table near the dance floor, Claire Mercer stood in a pale gold dress, laughing with donors. She turned when Nina called her name.

Her smile held for exactly one second.

Then she saw Lucia.

Then Lucia's pregnancy.

Then her brother.

Claire set down her champagne. "This is inappropriate."

Nina placed the forged documents on the table. "Actually, it's overdue."

What followed was not a dramatic confession. Claire did not break down in tears or announce herself a villain. She did something more believable. She tried to justify herself.

She said Hugh had been ruining his life.

She said Lucia had made everything harder.

She said their father would never recover if Hugh "kept choosing chaos."

She said she only meant to separate them for a little while.

"But you took our money," Hugh said.

Claire's face changed.

Nina answered for her. "To cover debts your father didn't know about."

Daniel exhaled sharply. "Claire."

Lucia listened in silence. The room around them blurred. The white flowers on the tables looked suddenly like the arrangements in the hallway. Pretty things arranged around damage.

At last Claire looked at Lucia and said, "You were going to leave eventually."

Lucia stepped closer.

"No," she said. "I was going to stay."

That was the truth Claire had never understood. Not everyone loved conditionally.

Hotel security came quietly. Nina had already made the call.

Later, in the now-empty hallway, Hugh stood with Lucia beside the room service cart she had left behind.

"I don't expect forgiveness tonight," he said.

"You won't get it tonight," she answered.

He nodded.

Then she took his hand and placed it, briefly, over the child she had protected all evening. The baby moved.

Hugh's eyes filled.

"This is your son," Lucia said. "What happens next depends on whether you learn how not to disappear."

He bowed his head. "I will."

Maybe he would. Maybe he would fail. Trust was not restored in a ballroom or a hallway.

But when Lucia turned back toward work, she did not feel abandoned.

She felt seen.

And behind her, for the first time in months, Hugh followed when she said, "Walk with me."

"This is your son."
