He Called the Waitress His Wife at the Gala

CHAPTER 3 - THE THING HE HID

They moved into a small private lounge off the hallway because Lucia refused to collapse in front of guests.

The room was quiet and gold-lit, with stiff chairs and a tray of untouched water glasses. Lucia remained standing. Hugh stood across from her. Nina stayed near the door. The silver-haired man introduced himself as Daniel Mercer, Hugh's uncle.

No one sat. No one relaxed.

"Tell me now," Lucia said. "All of it."

Hugh looked older than he had six months ago. More tired. Less polished than the expensive suit suggested.

"My father had a stroke in March," he said. "A massive one. Daniel called me to Maine that night."

Lucia folded her arms over her stomach. "And that required disappearing?"

"No." His answer came fast. Honest. "What required that was what happened after."

Daniel stepped in. "Hugh's father blamed your marriage for everything. He always hated that Hugh had left the family business and moved away. When the stroke left him confused, he became paranoid. He thought everyone was stealing from him."

Nina added, "There were legal issues. Medical authority. Financial freezes. The old man changed documents every other day. It was chaos."

Lucia heard the words, but none of them explained silence.

Hugh finally met her eyes. "I lost my phone the second day. Then my father had one of his episodes and accused you of marrying me for immigration papers."

Lucia flinched as if slapped.

Hugh's face twisted. "I hit him. Daniel had to pull me off him."

Daniel did not deny it.

Hugh went on. "After that, I was threatened with charges if I came near him again. Daniel convinced them not to press them, but only if I stayed away while they sorted his care. Nina was trying to get access to my accounts, my records, everything. I should have found another way to contact you. I know that. I know."

Lucia whispered, "You should have."

He nodded. "When I got back to Chicago, our apartment had been cleared out."

Lucia swallowed hard. "The landlord said you had surrendered the lease."

Nina frowned. "Hugh never did that."

The room went still.

Lucia looked from Nina to Hugh.

"If you didn't end our lease," she said slowly, "who did?"

"You should have found another way to contact you."

Nina was already reaching for her briefcase. "I think I know where we start."
