The Maid's Secret Changed Everything
Chapter 4 - The Family That Needed No Baby
Margaret smiled as if nothing was wrong.
"Congratulations."
Adrian did not smile.
"How long have you known Keller falsified my records?"
Emma stopped breathing.
Margaret looked at him calmly.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
Adrian placed one of the payment records on the desk.
Her eyes moved toward it.
That was enough.
"Leave, Emma," Margaret said.
Emma did not move.
Margaret's tone hardened.
"This is a family matter."
Adrian stepped beside Emma.
"She is carrying my child."
Margaret finally lost control.
"You don't know that."
The words came too quickly.
Adrian stared at her.
"Interesting."
Margaret realized her mistake.
Emma's hand instinctively moved toward her stomach.
Adrian noticed.
So did Margaret.
He stepped between them.
"Don't look at her like that."
Margaret laughed bitterly.
"You have no idea what this woman wants."
"Neither did you when you paid Keller."
Margaret's face tightened.
Adrian continued.
"My father knew."
That changed everything.
"Charles was confused before he died."
"No. He was investigating you."
Margaret turned toward the door.
Two men stood outside.
Not police.
Victor.
And Dr. Keller.
Emma backed away.
Adrian immediately understood.
Margaret had not come to talk.
Victor closed the door.
"You should have left the study locked."
Adrian reached for his phone.
Keller shook his head.
"Don't."
Margaret looked exhausted rather than frightened.
"You were never supposed to find out."
Adrian stared at his aunt.
"What did you do to my father?"
Silence.
Victor answered instead.
"He wouldn't stop."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Victor."
But it was too late.
Adrian's voice went cold.
"Wouldn't stop what?"
Victor stepped forward.
"Changing the trust. Investigating Keller. Trying to cut us out."
Emma whispered:
"You killed him."
Margaret snapped:
"It wasn't supposed to happen."
Adrian looked at her.
"What wasn't?"
She finally broke.
Keller had been giving Charles medication for his heart.
Margaret asked him to increase the dosage enough to make Charles weak and confused.
They wanted the board to question his judgment.
Instead, Charles collapsed.
He died.
Emma covered her mouth.
Adrian remained completely still.
Then Margaret looked at Emma's stomach.
"One mistake destroyed everything."
Adrian moved instantly.
He placed himself in front of her.
But Emma had already pressed something inside her apron pocket.
Her phone.
Recording.
She had started it when Margaret entered.
And sirens were already approaching the mansion.
