She Fed a Stranger, Then Lost Her Job

CHAPTER 1 - The Milk at Register Three
"Don't worry, sir. Keep your change. This one's on me."
Mara Ellison said it softly, sliding the carton of milk into the paper bag before the old man could pull it back out.
He looked about seventy, maybe older.
The old man swallowed hard. "Oh no, my child... I can't let you do that."
"It's only milk." Mara gave him a small smile. "Take it home."
Behind her, she felt the mood shift.
Troy Vance, the duty manager, stepped up with the stiff posture he used whenever he wanted everyone to remember who held the keys. His gold watch flashed under the lights as his hand came down over the milk.
"You're against the rule," he said coldly. "Put the milk back."
Mara blinked. "He's short a few cents, and I used my own money."
Troy's jaw tightened. "Policy is policy."
The old man stared at the milk like it was suddenly dangerous. Mara saw shame spreading across his face, and something in her refused to let that stand.
She reached around Troy's hand, picked up the bag, and placed it gently in the man's arms.
"Take it, sir. Have a wonderful day."
The old man pressed the bag to his chest. His eyes shone.
"God bless your pure heart, young lady..."
Then Troy ripped Mara's name tag from her apron.
The plastic snapped in his fist and hit the counter hard.
"You're fired on the spot. Clear your locker and get out."
The line of customers went silent.
Mara's throat burned, but she lifted her chin. "I did nothing wrong."
Troy smiled without warmth. "You disobeyed me in front of customers. That's enough."
Mara turned to leave, her face hot with humiliation. She did not see the old man turn slowly in place. She did not see his posture change. She did not see the trembling hands steady.
Only when she had reached the aisle did she hear the old man speak again, and his voice was no longer weak.
"Fire this store manager immediately."
