The Sister She Mourned, the Child She Never Knew

CHAPTER 1 - THE BROOCH
"Hey, don't touch me."
The words came out sharper than Claire Bennett intended.
She had been walking fast, coffee in one hand, phone in the other, already late for a meeting downtown.
Then a little boy stepped right into her path.
He was maybe seven. He lifted both hands like he was offering something fragile to the morning.
A silver brooch.
Leaf-shaped.
Set with a tiny dark red stone.
Claire's breath caught.
Without thinking, she touched the matching brooch pinned to her blazer. She had worn it for twenty years. Through college, through her marriage, through her divorce, through the funeral she still hated remembering.
"You... you've got the same brooch," the boy said.
The street noise seemed to drain away.
Claire stared at him. "Wait, what did you just say?"
He looked relieved now, as if he had finally found the right person. She saw that his hands were trembling.
He leaned closer. "Mom told me... if I showed this to you, you'd know."
Something old and painful shifted inside her.
Claire crouched in front of him. Her fingers shook as they brushed his cheek. "What's your mother's name?"
The boy swallowed. "Sophia. Sophia Blake."
Claire felt the ground tilt.
Sophia.
Her younger sister's name.
Her sister who had vanished from Claire's life twenty-two years ago after one terrible fight. Her sister whose memorial service had been held eight years later when no one could find her. Her sister Claire had already grieved.
"Oh God," Claire whispered. "Sophia?"
Before she could ask another question, a man across the street shouted, "Eli!"
The boy flinched hard.
And when Claire turned, she saw a tall woman in a navy coat hurrying toward them, her face pale with fear.
It was not Sophia.
But the woman was carrying Sophia's old leather satchel.
"If you know that name, then please help us."
