"Hands Off the Car," She Said to the Owner's Son

CHAPTER 3 - A NAME HIS FATHER NEVER SAID

The private office upstairs smelled like coffee, leather, and rain trapped in expensive coats.

Malik sat on a sofa with the photograph in both hands. His mother, Nora, was smiling in it. Younger. Happy. One arm around the silver-haired woman who now sat across from him like someone waiting for a verdict.

Isaiah stood by the window with his back turned.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then Malik asked the only question that mattered to him.

"If she's my grandmother, why have I never met her?"

Isaiah answered without turning around. "Because she made sure your mother had to choose."

Elena closed her eyes.

Years ago, she explained, Nora had fallen in love with Isaiah when both were barely more than kids. Isaiah had come from a working family. He fixed engines, studied at night, and dreamed bigger than anyone around him. Elena had wanted a different life for her daughter. Safer. Cleaner. Predictable.

So she had offered money.

Not to Isaiah.

To Nora.

To leave him.

Malik felt sick.

"My mother took money to leave my father?"

"No," Isaiah said sharply, finally turning. "She took it because you were coming, and I was too proud to admit how broke we were. She used every dollar to keep us housed while I started my business. Then she came back and told me everything."

Elena's eyes filled. "I was ashamed. By the time I tried to repair it, Nora was already sick."

Nora's cancer had moved fast. Too fast for apologies. Too fast for second chances.

Malik remembered hospital blankets. His mother's thin hand. Her voice telling him to be brave for Daddy.

"Did Mom forgive you?" he asked.

Elena did not answer at once.

"She wrote me a letter," she said. "I never had the courage to deliver it to your father."

Isaiah's jaw tightened. "You kept it for three years?"

"I kept it because I was a coward."

Rafael knocked once and stepped in quietly. "Sir, I'm sorry. There's another issue. The woman from the floor is not just a guest."

Isaiah looked up. "What do you mean?"

Rafael hesitated.

"She's engaged to Daniel Mercer. The investor you're supposed to sign with at six. And he's threatening to walk unless she receives a public apology."

Malik stared at his father.

The woman who mocked him was now tied to a deal big enough to shake the whole company.
