He Chose His Daughter Over the New Bride

Chapter 1 - The Little Girl Crying in the Corner

"She said after you say 'I do,' I have to leave forever."

Daniel Whitmore felt the world stop.

His daughter, Lily, was standing by the window in the private bridal lounge, her face wet with tears.

Daniel knelt in front of her.

"Lily, look at me."

She tried, but her eyes trembled.

"Who told you that?"

Lily pulled a folded note from her small purse. Daniel took it carefully. The paper was crumpled, as if she had held it for a long time before finding the courage to show him.

The handwriting was elegant.

Too elegant to belong to a child.

After the wedding, your father will have a new family.

Daniel squeezed the note so tightly that the paper almost tore.

He had lost his wife, Clara, three years earlier. Since then, Lily had been his entire world. The reason he had agreed to remarry was not because he wanted to forget Clara, but because he believed Lily deserved a bigger family, a woman who had promised to love her as her own.

That woman was Vivian.

The bride.

At that moment, the door opened.

Vivian stepped inside in her champagne satin wedding gown, her face tight with impatience.

"Darling, the bishop is waiting."

Daniel did not move.

Lily hid behind him.

Vivian looked at the child, and her smile faded.

"Leave her with the nanny."

The sentence was cold. Natural. As if she were talking about a coat someone had left on a chair.

Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.

Vivian seemed to realize too late that something had changed.

"Daniel, do not do this now. Everyone is waiting."

He stood.

In one hand, he held the note. With the other, he took Lily's hand.

His voice was low, but every word landed harder than a shout.

"The wedding is off. You will never touch my daughter again."

Vivian froze.

The color drained from her face.

From the hallway came the murmurs of guests. The wedding music was still playing beyond the doors, as if no one knew the marriage had already died before it began.

Vivian took one step toward him.

"Daniel, that child is lying."

Lily let out a sob.

Daniel looked at the woman he had almost made his wife.

"Then explain why this is your handwriting."

Vivian opened her mouth.

No words came out.

And for the first time, Daniel understood that his daughter's fear had not begun that morning.

It had been growing silently inside his own home.
