The Girl at the Gate Warned Him Not To Go To the Car
CHAPTER 3 - The Woman in the Doorway
Daniel could not breathe.
The woman in the doorway looked old enough to be his mother now, but her eyes were the same. Dark. Sharp. Terrified in a way that matched Lucy's face too closely.
Elaine moved quickly toward her. "Mara, go back inside."
Daniel stared at his wife. "You knew my mother was alive?"
Lucy made a small sound. "I told you."
"Quiet," Elaine said, not cruelly, but with the strain of someone holding a cracking wall in place.
Daniel looked from Elaine to the old woman. "Tell me who you are."
The woman pressed her lips together. "My name is Mara Sloane. I am the nurse who raised you after the fire."
After the fire.
The words struck like a blow. Daniel had lived his whole life believing he survived a house fire that killed his parents when he was four. It was the story Elaine had heard from him a hundred times. The story that had shaped him into the man he was.
Mara took one unsteady step forward. "Your mother did not die. She escaped with you. But someone wanted you gone, Daniel. Someone in that house."
Daniel turned to Elaine. "And you knew this?"
"Only part of it," she said. "I found records two weeks ago. Hidden records. I tried to keep you away until I understood them."
"By sending armed men?"
"They were not mine," she snapped, losing control for the first time. "That is exactly why I'm afraid."
Lucy slipped out from behind Daniel and reached into the pocket of her blazer. She pulled out a folded photograph, old and bent. "I found this in the office drawer. It had your name on the back."
Daniel took it.
The picture showed a younger Mara holding a little boy. Beside her stood a woman with Daniel's eyes and the same dark hair, alive and smiling.
On the back, in faded blue ink, were three words:
Protect him. Not him.
Daniel looked up slowly. "Who wrote this?"
Mara's face crumpled. "Your mother did."
