Daddy, Why Is Everyone Calling Mommy the Maid?
CHAPTER 5 - THE BOAT SONG
By the time the last guests had gone, dawn had begun to soften the ballroom windows.
The chandeliers were dim now. The marble floor no longer looked cold. It looked honest.
Noah woke in Lucia's lap on a velvet chair near the empty dance floor. For a moment he blinked, disoriented.
Then he saw her.
"You're still here."
Lucia brushed damp curls off his forehead. "I'm still here."
Adrian stood a few feet away, holding the crayon drawing. He had spent the last hour with lawyers, not for drama or revenge, but for immediate custody review, false representation, and formal statements. Evelyn had left through a side entrance in silence. Marta had agreed to testify. So had the catering server. So had Mrs. Bell.
But none of that felt as important as this small boy in a wrinkled little tailcoat looking at his mother like sunrise.
"I failed both of you," Adrian said.
Lucia met his eyes. He looked older than he had at the start of the night. Not weaker. Just stripped down to truth.
"I should have looked harder," he said. "I should have questioned everything."
"You were grieving," Lucia replied. "So was I."
Noah reached one hand toward Adrian and one toward Lucia until they both moved closer.
"Sing it," he said.
Lucia laughed through tears. "The boat song?"
He nodded.
So she sang.
Softly at first. A simple old tune about the sea bringing lost people home.
Halfway through, Adrian joined in, off-key on the second line just as he always had been. Noah smiled, then yawned, then leaned against both of them as if this arrangement had always belonged to him.
"Children don't always remember facts. They remember who felt like home."
Later that morning, Lucia walked out of the hotel not in her gray uniform but in a wool coat Marta had found for her. She still carried the white apron folded over one arm.
She paused at the door.
"What will you do with that?" Adrian asked.
Lucia looked at the apron, then at Noah's drawing in his hand.
"Keep it," she said. "It brought my son back to me."
Adrian nodded. "And maybe... if you'll allow it... we start with breakfast."
Lucia did not answer right away.
But Noah slipped his small hand into both of theirs.
And this time, nobody tried to pull him away.
