The Stranger Who Bought Every Dish

CHAPTER 1 - THE BOY AT THE COUNTER
"I'm hungry..."
The little girl's voice was so soft it almost disappeared beneath the low piano music drifting through the restaurant.
Ethan tightened his arms around his sister. Daisy's face was wet with tears, and dirt smudged both her cheeks. He kissed the top of her head the way their mother used to, though he was only ten and still didn't know how to make fear sound less sharp.
He looked up at the clerk behind the front counter.
"Is there any leftover food from today?" he asked, careful to be polite. "We don't have much money..."
The woman didn't even lift her eyes at first. She kept wiping the counter in slow, hard strokes.
"We don't give away food here. Move along."
Daisy let out a broken sob and buried her face in Ethan's chest. He felt every eye in the room and wished he could disappear, but hunger was stronger than shame. He stayed where he was.
That was when a chair scraped behind them.
A man in a dark suit rose from a table near the window. He looked to be in his late sixties, straight-backed, silver-haired, with the kind of face that had learned both authority and sorrow. He walked over and placed one hand gently on Ethan's shoulder.
"Bring out your best dishes," he told the clerk. "I'm paying for them."
She blinked. "Sir? Are you sure?"
"Everything."
The whole room seemed to change shape after that. The clerk hurried away. Daisy slowly lifted her head. Ethan stared at the man, trying to understand why a stranger would do such a thing.
Then the man crouched to their level.
"Come with me, kids," he said softly.
Ethan's hand moved on instinct to the crumpled photograph in his pocket. It was old, yellowed, almost torn at the edges. He pulled it out and held it up with shaking fingers.
"Thank you, sir... You look familiar. Is this you?"
The man's face drained of color when he saw the younger version of himself holding a baby.
And then he whispered one name.
"Clara?"
