The Girl They Called Trash Was His Lost Sister

Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Door

Before sunrise, the Ashford cars reached Saint Helena Private Care.

The building looked clean, quiet, and expensive. Too quiet. The kind of place where secrets could be kept under locked doors and medical language.

The administrator tried to delay them.

Charles did not raise his voice. "Open the locked wing, or I will have the police open it for you."

Twenty minutes later, they stood outside Room 23.

Adrian held the silver key. Lily held his other hand.

Charles stood behind them, looking like a man afraid of the truth and desperate for it at the same time.

The door opened.

A woman sat near the window.

Her face was thinner than Adrian remembered. Her hair had streaks of silver now. But the moment she turned, he knew her.

"Mother," he whispered.

Catherine Ashford stared at him.

For a second, she did not move. Then her lips trembled.

"Adrian?"

He crossed the room and fell to his knees before her.

Charles stood frozen in the doorway.

Catherine looked past Adrian and saw Lily.

The child stared back with wide eyes.

Catherine's hand flew to her mouth.

"Sophia?"

Lily whispered, "Mommy?"

Then she ran into Catherine's arms.

Both of them began to cry.

Charles took one step forward, broken. "I thought you were dead."

Catherine looked at him with ten years of pain in her eyes.

"They told me you signed the papers," she said. "They told me my baby died. Every time I begged to leave, they drugged me."

Charles turned to the administrator.

"Who paid for this room?"

The woman looked away.

"Answer him," Adrian said.

The administrator swallowed. "Vanessa Hartwell."

No one spoke.

The truth was too large for words.

Vanessa had not only stolen a child.

She had buried Catherine alive inside a private facility for ten years.

By the time police arrived at Ashford Hall, Vanessa was already gone.

But she had made one mistake.

She took the engagement ring.

And every Ashford diamond could be traced.
