The Old Woman They Threw Out Was the Real Owner

Chapter 5: The New Owner

The next morning, the scandal filled every major paper.

Laurent House Director Arrested After Founder Returns in Disguise.

The story became impossible to ignore. There were photos of Celeste in handcuffs, photos of the old vault, photos of the empty diamond case, and one image that made the world stop: Adelaide Laurent sitting in her wheelchair while Noah Bennett knelt beside her, holding the broken pearl necklace in his hand.

But Adelaide did not celebrate.

She spent the morning in the workshop where Clara Bennett had once worked. The old tools were still there, cleaned and waiting. Noah stood beside her in silence.

"My mother loved this place," he said.

"I know," Adelaide replied. "That is why Celeste hated her."

Noah looked down. "I only helped you because my mother taught me never to ignore someone in trouble."

Adelaide smiled. "That is exactly why I chose you."

Three weeks later, Laurent House reopened.

The marble step at the entrance was gone, replaced by a beautiful brass ramp. Every staff member had been retrained. Every customer, rich or ordinary, was greeted with dignity. At the center of the showroom, a framed notice announced that Clara Bennett's name had been cleared.

Celeste's office had been emptied.

Noah's name was now on the door.

Acting Owner and Director, under the guidance of Adelaide Laurent.

On the first day, an elderly woman with a cane entered the boutique nervously. Before she could apologize for walking slowly, a young saleswoman stepped forward and smiled.

"Welcome to Laurent House. Please take your time."

From the upstairs balcony, Adelaide watched.

Her repaired pearl necklace rested around her neck. The gold key pendant shone against her sweater.

Noah stood beside her.

"I still do not know if I am ready," he admitted.

Adelaide placed the key in his hand.

"The cruel always think power is taken," she said. "But real power is trusted to the person who would never abuse it."

Downstairs, customers began to applaud.

Noah looked at Adelaide, his eyes shining.

"I will protect what you built."

Adelaide smiled.

"No, Noah. Protect the people who walk through that door."

And this time, no one was turned away.
