She Said Six, but the Boy's Age Was the Smaller Secret

CHAPTER 1 - THE NAME HE NEVER STOPPED HEARING
"Please help! My son is dying!"
The automatic doors had barely finished opening when the woman stumbled through them with a boy in her arms.
Dr. Marco Alvarez moved before thought could catch up with him.
He reached for the boy's back, steadying him. "Let's get him on the bed."
Then he looked up.
And for one second, the emergency room disappeared.
"Isabella?"
Her eyes flew to his.
"Marco?"
She said his name like it had lived buried under years of silence and had suddenly been pulled into daylight.
But she dropped her gaze almost at once.
Together they laid the boy on the exam bed. He stirred, eyelids fluttering, one hand clinging weakly to Isabella's sleeve.
Marco put his stethoscope to the child's chest. Fast breathing. Tight lungs. Fever-bright skin. The boy needed treatment now, not old history.
"How old is he?" Marco asked.
Isabella was straightening the boy's collar. Her fingers slowed.
She swallowed.
Then she said, too softly, "Six."
Marco glanced at the chart nurse's blank intake line, then back at the child.
The boy frowned and tugged at his mother's sleeve.
"Mommy, aren't I seven?"
Isabella's hand froze.
Marco kept the stethoscope against the boy's chest, but his eyes lifted to her face. She wouldn't meet them.
He had spent seven years trying to forget the night she vanished without explanation.
Now she stood in front of him with a frightened child who had his dark eyes.
Marco turned sharply toward the doorway and called for a nebulizer and labs. Then, lower, to Isabella alone, he said, "You told me six."
She looked as if she might break.
Before she could answer, the boy opened his eyes wider, stared at Marco's face, and whispered, "Mom says I have your smile."
Marco's hand slipped on the stethoscope.
